Is This Website Down? Uptime Check
Check a site from several regions right now.
How it works
Is this website down for everyone, or just you?
Enter a domain and we request the homepage from MailShrine's servers, resolve its DNS, and test whether ports 80 and 443 accept connections. You get the HTTP status, the final URL after redirects, response time, the IP that answered and the server software. If our request succeeds and yours does not, the problem is on your network, device or ISP, not the site. If it fails for us too, the site really is down.
Results appear here after you click Check if it's down.
How this works
- 1
Resolve the domain
We look up the A record over DNS-over-HTTPS to see which IP the name points to, or whether it exists at all.
- 2
Connect and request
Our server opens TCP connections to ports 80 and 443, then fetches the homepage over HTTPS with HTTP as a fallback.
- 3
Read the response
Status code, redirect chain, timing, IP and server header are interpreted into a plain verdict and next steps.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if a website is down for everyone or just me?
- Run this check. It fetches the site from MailShrine's servers, so if we get a 200 response and you do not, the problem is between you and the site: DNS cache, ISP, VPN, firewall or a stale browser cache. If we fail too, the site is actually down.
- What does a 502 or 503 error mean?
- 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Timeout mean a proxy or CDN in front of the site is working but the origin server behind it is not answering. 503 Service Unavailable usually means the server is overloaded or in maintenance. All three are the site owner's problem, not yours.
- DNS works but the ports are closed. What happened?
- The domain points to an IP, but nothing is listening on 80 or 443 there. Common causes are a stopped web server, a firewall rule that blocks public traffic, or an A record pointing at an old server that was decommissioned.
- Can this tool monitor my site continuously?
- This page does one live check at a time. Continuous monitoring with email or SMS alerts when your site goes down is available in a free MailShrine account, where checks run every minute from several locations.
- Why does the site load for me but show as down here?
- Some sites block data centre IPs or automated requests with a 403 or 429, and some geo-block whole regions. Our check comes from a cloud server, so a block page or rate limit shows up as an error even though browsers in your area load the site normally.
Every MailShrine domain includes WHOIS privacy, transfer lock, Anycast DNS with DNSSEC and two business mailboxes.
