Who Is the Registrar? Registrar Lookup

Find where a domain is registered so you know where to transfer from.

How it works

Registrar lookup: find out where a domain is registered

You cannot renew, unlock or transfer a domain until you know which registrar holds it. Enter the domain and we read the sponsoring registrar and its IANA ID from the registry's RDAP record (WHOIS's replacement), spot wholesale registrars that hide a reseller behind them, infer the DNS host from the nameservers, and tell you exactly where to log in to get the auth code. If you are thinking of moving, you also see MailShrine's live transfer price for the extension.

How this works

  1. 1

    Read the registrar entity

The registry's RDAP record names the sponsoring registrar and its IANA ID; this is the company that can unlock and transfer the domain.

  2. 2

    Spot resellers

Wholesale registrars such as Tucows or Key-Systems appear on millions of reseller domains, so we flag them and use the nameservers to point at the likely reseller.

  3. 3

    Add transfer pricing

We load MailShrine's live price list for the extension so you can see what moving the domain would cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out who my domain registrar is?
Enter the domain above; the registrar is a public field in every registry's RDAP record. If the result names a wholesale registrar you have never heard of (Tucows, eNom, Key-Systems), your real provider is a reseller, usually the web host or agency that set up the site.
Is the registrar the same as the hosting company?
Not necessarily. The registrar holds the registration; hosting serves the website; DNS can be at a third place. Many web hosts are also resellers of a registrar, which is why one company can appear to do everything. The nameservers show the DNS host, not the registrar.
I registered through my web designer. Who owns the domain?
Legally, whoever is listed as registrant. If your designer registered it in their own account you depend on them to transfer it. Ask them to either change the registrant to you and give you the auth code, or push the domain to an account in your name.
What is an IANA registrar ID?
Every ICANN-accredited registrar has a numeric ID (for example 146 for GoDaddy, 1068 for Namecheap, 1910 for Cloudflare). It uniquely identifies the registrar even when the brand name on the record is a subsidiary.
How do I transfer my domain away from this registrar?
Unlock the domain, get the EPP/auth code from the current registrar, make sure the registrant email is one you can read, then start the transfer at the new registrar and approve the confirmation email. It takes up to five days and adds a year to your expiry.

Every MailShrine domain includes WHOIS privacy, transfer lock, Anycast DNS with DNSSEC and two business mailboxes.
