Short Domain Finder (4–6 letters)
Find short available names across many extensions.
How it works
Find short, pronounceable 4 to 6 letter domains that are still free
Short names are scarce: every 4-letter .com has been registered since 2013 and most 5-letter words are gone too. This tool generates pronounceable consonant-vowel patterns (like 'vemo' or 'kalto') seeded by a word you like, optionally forcing the name to start with your letters, and checks the six best against the registry. Choose .io, .co, .ai or .xyz for realistic odds; pick .com if you want to know what a short one really costs on the aftermarket.
Results appear here after you click Find short names.
How this works
- 1
Generate pronounceable patterns
Consonant-vowel templates (CVCV, CVCVC and so on) are filled deterministically from a hash of your seed, honouring any forced start.
- 2
Filter for sayability
Names with doubled letters or consonant clusters are dropped so what remains can be read aloud and spelled from hearing.
- 3
Verify the first six
The candidates are checked against the registry through our search API and priced live; the rest are listed for a bulk check.
Frequently asked questions
- Are any 4-letter .com domains still available?
- No. Every possible 4-letter .com was registered by late 2013. The only way to get one is to buy it from the current owner on the aftermarket, where prices start around a few hundred dollars for unpronounceable strings and run to thousands for word-like ones.
- Which extensions still have short names free?
- .io, .co, .xyz, .me and .app still have plenty of pronounceable 4 to 6 letter names at standard price, and .ai has some at a higher renewal. This tool defaults to .io for that reason; switch to .com only if you are prepared for aftermarket prices.
- Why does short matter so much?
- Short names are quicker to type, fit on signage and social handles, and are easier to say on a call. They also hold resale value. Do not sacrifice pronounceability for length though: 'kalto' beats 'kxqt' every time.
- How does the generator pick letters?
- It uses consonant-vowel templates that English speakers find easy to say, fills them from a hash of your seed word so results are repeatable, and rejects clusters that are hard to pronounce. Using a ^ prefix forces the first letters, useful when you want a name that starts like your brand.
- What do short domains cost?
- At standard registration a short .io or .co costs the same as any other name on that extension; the first-year and renewal prices are shown above. Taken short names appear as 'For sale' with the owner's Buy Now price, which you can purchase through MailShrine and receive as a transfer.
Every MailShrine domain includes WHOIS privacy, transfer lock, Anycast DNS with DNSSEC and two business mailboxes.
