How it works
Domain, email and hosting: what a small business really pays per year
A domain is the cheapest part of being online; hosting and email are where the yearly cost lives. Enter your domain, how you plan to host the website and how many mailboxes you need. We price the domain live from MailShrine, price email from our live mailbox plans, and show typical public price bands for each hosting choice so you can see the full first-year and ongoing cost side by side. Hosting figures are ranges, not quotes.
Results appear here after you click Estimate cost.
How this works
- 1
Price the domain live
We read MailShrine's first-year and renewal price for your extension from the live pricing API.
- 2
Match a mailbox plan
The smallest live MailShrine plan that covers your mailbox count sets the email cost, billed monthly.
- 3
Add a hosting band
Each hosting choice has a typical public price range; we add it to the domain and email to show the yearly total.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a domain and hosting cost per year?
- A .com domain is about $12.99 a year. Hosting ranges from free (static hosts) through $36 to $180 a year for shared hosting, to $200 to $500 for a website builder and more for e-commerce platforms. Email on your domain adds $0 to a few dollars per mailbox per month.
- Do I need hosting to buy a domain?
- No. You can register a domain on its own, use it for email immediately and add a website whenever you are ready. Many businesses run for months on domain plus email before building a site.
- Is a website builder cheaper than hosting plus WordPress?
- Shared hosting is cheaper on paper, but builders bundle templates, security and support. For a non-technical owner the builder often costs less once you count time; for anyone comfortable with WordPress, shared hosting wins on price.
- What is the difference between a domain and hosting?
- The domain is your address; hosting is the computer that serves your website at that address. Email is a third service that uses the domain but does not need web hosting at all.
- Are the hosting prices here quotes?
- No. They are typical public list prices in USD, checked October 2026, shown as ranges because hosts change prices and run promotions constantly. Only the domain and MailShrine email figures are live prices you would actually pay.
Every MailShrine domain includes WHOIS privacy, transfer lock, Anycast DNS with DNSSEC and two business mailboxes.
